The Dell PowerEdge R630 is a dual-socket 1U rack server built on the Intel C610 chipset, designed to squeeze genuine two-socket performance into a single rack unit. Each of its two sockets accepts an Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 processor, with core counts running from 4 up to 22 per socket and 2.5MB of cache per core — giving a fully populated system as many as 44 physical cores in a 1U footprint, a density that made it a popular choice for consolidating older 2U estates.
Memory scales across 24 DDR4 DIMM slots, supporting 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB or 64GB modules running at up to 2400MT/s, for a maximum of 1.5TB per server. That slot count gives real headroom to grow into memory-hungry workloads — virtual desktop infrastructure, in-memory databases or large VMware clusters — without immediately forcing a hardware refresh.
Storage configuration is where the R630 earns its versatility. Dell offered three backplane options: up to 24 x 1.8" SATA SSDs for an all-flash transactional layout, up to 10 x 2.5" SAS/SATA/nearline-SAS drives for general-purpose virtualisation, or an 8-bay 2.5" configuration for a shorter chassis depth. RAID is handled by the PERC S130 software controller or hardware options up to PERC H730P, and up to four NVMe PCIe Express Flash devices can be fitted for workloads that need sub-millisecond storage latency, such as OLTP databases or e-commerce platforms under load.
Networking and expansion are equally configurable, with embedded LOM options spanning 4 x 1Gb through to 4 x 10Gb, plus up to three PCIe 3.0 expansion slots for additional NICs, HBAs or accelerators. Power is supplied by 495W, 750W or 1100W units in Platinum or Titanium efficiency tiers, with hot-plug redundant power and cooling as standard on most configurations. Remote management runs through iDRAC8 with Lifecycle Controller, including the Quick Sync NFC bezel for at-the-box diagnostics without a laptop.
As a refurbished platform, the R630 sits in a particularly good spot: it's mature enough that firmware, driver and hypervisor support are well established, yet the E5-2600 v4 generation still delivers meaningful core counts and DDR4 memory bandwidth for current workloads. Because Dell built so many R630 units across such a wide configuration range, sourcing well-tested drives, controllers and processor pairings for a like-for-like refurbished build is straightforward, and every unit we ship carries a 3 year warranty.
