Lenovo SR650

The Lenovo ThinkSystem SR650 is a 2U dual-socket rack server designed around second-generation Intel Xeon Platinum processors, supporting up to two CPUs at up to 205W each. This gives a wide range of core-count and clock-speed combinations, from high-frequency parts suited to licensing-sensitive workloads through to high-core-count chips for dense virtualisation. Memory scales to 7.5TB across 24 DIMM slots when using 128GB modules alongside Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory, running at 2666MHz or 2933MHz TruDDR4 speeds. For most deployments a more modest configuration using standard RDIMMs is sufficient, but the ceiling is there for in-memory databases or large hypervisor consolidation projects that need to keep VM density high without swapping to disk. Drive flexibility is one of the SR650's strongest points. Backplane options span 14x 3.5in bays for capacity-oriented builds up to 24x 2.5in hot-swap bays, with AnyBay configurations supporting up to 12 bays of mixed SAS/SATA/NVMe and dedicated all-NVMe backplanes up to 24 bays. Two internal M.2 slots with RAID 1 support keep the boot volume separate from data storage. RAID is handled by Lenovo's hardware controllers, offering up to 24 ports with flash cache backup, or HBAs up to 16 ports for software-defined storage stacks such as Ceph or Storage Spaces Direct. Up to seven PCIe 3.0 expansion slots, delivered through a choice of riser configurations, give room for additional networking, GPUs for light acceleration workloads, or extra storage controllers. Network options range from 1GbE LOM through to 4-port 10GbE (Base-T or SFP+), plus a dedicated 1GbE port for out-of-band management via the embedded XClarity Controller. Typical deployments for the SR650 include VMware or Hyper-V virtualisation hosts, SQL Server and Oracle database servers, and general-purpose application or file serving where dual-socket resilience and hot-swap redundancy on drives, fans and PSUs matter. The chassis is rated for 45°C continuous operation, which suits environments without tightly controlled cooling. Buying the SR650 refurbished makes particular sense given how configurable the platform is: the same chassis supports drastically different processor, memory and storage combinations, so a refurbished unit can be rebuilt to a specific workload rather than accepting a fixed retail configuration.
