The SuperMicro SuperServer 2029BT-HNC1R is a 2U twin-architecture chassis (model CSE-217BHQ+-R2K22BP2) housing four fully independent, hot-swappable server nodes, each built around the Super X11DPT-B motherboard. The four nodes share a pair of 2200W Titanium-rated (96% efficiency) redundant power supplies, but each node operates as its own compute domain with separate BMC, memory and storage, a design that suits operators who need to maximise sockets and cores per rack unit rather than per chassis.
Each node supports dual Socket P (LGA 3647) 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors, codenamed Cascade Lake or Skylake, with dual UPI links up to 10.4GT/s and up to 28 cores per socket. That gives a fully populated chassis up to eight CPU sockets and potentially over 200 physical cores in 2U. Memory scales to 24 DIMM slots per node, supporting up to 6TB of 3DS ECC DDR4-2933MHz RDIMM or LRDIMM, with Intel Optane DCPMM persistent memory support on Cascade Lake configurations for workloads that benefit from large, affordable memory tiers.
Storage per node is configurable as six SAS3 hot-swap 2.5" drive bays, or four NVMe plus two SAS3 bays, giving operators the choice between high-capacity SAS arrays and low-latency NVMe depending on the workload. A Broadcom 3108 controller handles SAS3 RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60, and each node adds two M.2 slots for dedicated NVMe or SATA boot drives, keeping OS storage separate from data volumes. Expansion per node is limited to a single low-profile PCIe 3.0 x16 slot plus a mandatory SIOM card slot for networking, a network card must be fitted to bring the node online, so this is factored into every configuration.
Management runs through an ASPEED AST2500 BMC with IPMI 2.0, KVM-over-LAN and virtual media, alongside Intel Node Manager, SuperDoctor 5 and SSM/SPM/SUM tooling, essential when an operator is managing dozens or hundreds of nodes across a fleet rather than a handful of standalone boxes. Four heavy-duty 8cm PWM fans with air shrouds handle thermal management across all four nodes.
This density makes the 2029BT-HNC1R a natural fit for hyperscale and hyperconverged deployments, HPC clusters, and multi-tenant hosting environments where rack space and power budgets are the binding constraints rather than raw single-node performance. Hardware of this class typically comes off lease from data centres running large, homogenous fleets, which means refurbished units are usually well-documented and consistently specified — a genuine advantage for hosting providers who need predictable behaviour across many identical nodes rather than one-off boxes. We configure and test each node individually before it ships, and the system carries a 3 year return-to-base warranty.
